STOCKTON PORTS - Month of April Conclusion
Stockton PortsPosted by: cyberstockton
PORTS SET TO CONCLUDE A FANTASTIC FIRST MONTH

Heading into the 2008 season, the Stockton Ports were expected to be one of the best teams in Minor League Baseball. This was due in large part to trades made by the Oakland A's in the offseason involving Dan Haren and Nick Swisher, and yielding a lot of young talent for Oakland. Thus far, the Ports have lived up to their billing. As of April 29, the Ports are in first place in the North Division with a record of 18-7. The Boys from Banner Island have won 15 of their last 18 games, and they'll look to continue their quest for a first-half title heading into May.

STOCKTON LIGHTNING - GAME RECAP: Iowa 47 - Stockton 24
Stockton LightningPosted by: cyberstockton

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Stockton Lightning (1-4) surrendered 20 unanswered points in the fourth quarter and the Iowa Barnstormers collected their first home victory after a six-year hiatus in a 47-24 Lightning defeat before a crowd of 10,454 at Wells Fargo Arena on Saturday night in week 5 of arenafootball2 play.

The Lightning dropped their fourth loss in a row and surrendered four turnovers in the loss as Iowa quarterback Joe Brannen threw for 135 yards, a 15-for-28 passing effort and two touchdowns.

Iowa posted the only score of the first quarter on Brannen's one-yard keeper up the middle, followed by a 28-point second quarter by both teams. WR Robert Kilow hauled in a 33-yard bomb over the middle with 10:44 left in the half, hiking the Barnstormers lead to 13-0.

Lightning FB Peter Tuialuuluu had two separate one-yard touchdown sprints in the second half, sandwiching a 57-yard kick return by Kilow to put the Lightning in a 20-14 hole at halftime. The Lightning had a chance to take the lead at the end of the half after a Raymond Little interception, but Daniel McLemore picked off a four-yard lob by Lightning QB Chad Elliott at the left corner of the end zone with under 10 seconds left.

STOCKTON PORTS - Cahill K's Career High As Ports Get 2-1 Win
Stockton PortsPosted by: cyberstockton
RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. Stockton Ports starter Trevor Cahill has always been known as a strikeout pitcher. It was never more true than on Sunday afternoon at the Epicenter. Cahill struck out a career-high 12 batters in seven innings—eight of those coming in the first three frames—as the Ports stole a 2-1 win from the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. With the win, the Ports improve their record to a league-best 17-7, and the Boys from Banner Island have now won 14 of their last 17 games.

Cahill ran into a bit of trouble in the bottom of the first inning. With runners at the corners, Wil Ortiz attempted to steal second base. Ports catcher Juan Nunez threw down to second, but the throw went clear into center field, allowing Anthony Norman—the runner at third—to come in and score to give the Quakes a 1-0 lead. It was an unearned run for Cahill, and it turned out to be the only run Rancho would score on the afternoon.

As dominant as Cahill was, Quakes starter Tommy Mendoza was equally so. Mendoza made the Quakes’ run stand tall as a skyscraper through seven innings. The closest the Ports came to scoring was when Nunez was thrown out on a play at the plate to end the fifth inning. Mendoza tossed seven scoreless innings, striking out three, and winding up with a no-decision.

STOCKTON PORTS - Ports Power Past Quakes With 6-3 Win
Stockton PortsPosted by: cyberstockton
RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif.Times are good lately for the Stockton Ports. Stockton is in a tie for first place in the Cal-League North Division, they’ve won 13 of their last 16 games, and on Saturday night at the Epicenter, they beat the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes for the fifth straight time, this time by a final of 6-3.
For the second straight night, it was the Ports that got the scoring started. With one out in the top of the second, Frank Martinez and Jermaine Mitchell knocked back-to-back singles to center. Mitchell was caught in a pickle between first and second, but Martinez drew a throw to third, allowing Mitchell to arrive at second safely. Mike Affronti followed with a two-run single to left to give Stockton a 2-0 lead.
Ports starter Brett Anderson (4-1) weaved in and out of jams through his six innings of work. Anderson, however, did not give up more than a run in any given inning. In the top of the second, Anderson allowed his first run—a solo home run to Brian Walker on the first pitch of the inning which made it 2-1.
Stockton answered right back in the third against Quakes starter Trevor Bell (1-2). With two outs, Chris Carter worked a walk, and came home when Jed Morris followed with an RBI double to right to give the Ports a 3-1 edge.
Once again, the Quakes answered back in the next half inning. With Anthony Norman at third and two out, Drew Toussaint singled to center to bring the Quakes to within a run at 3-2.
Stockton, however, followed with their most productive inning of the night. Mitchell led off with a triple to right-center, and scored on another Affronti RBI single to make it 4-2. Two batters later, Affronti stole second and Archie Gilbert walked.  At that point, Bell was taken out of the game in favor of Jared Incinelli. Incinelli immediately uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Affronti to move to third and Gilbert to move to second. Josh Horton then flew out to center, and both runners tagged and tried to advance. Affronti crossed home plate as the throw was cut off, and Gilbert was out at third, but Affronti’s run counted, giving Stockton a 5-2 lead.
Bell went 3.1 innings and allowed five runs on six hits in a losing effort.
Rancho scored their final run off Anderson in the fifth on an RBI groundout from Norman. It turned out to be their final run of the night. Anderson pitched a scoreless sixth and went on to earn the win, tossing six full innings and allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out three.
The Ports bullpen—a combination of Jared Lansford and Sam Demel (SV, 1) tossed three scoreless innings to preserve the lead. Lansford pitched two scoreless and Demel pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the save.
Stockton added an insurance run in the eighth when Chris Carter took an Incinelli pitch over the left field fence—a mammoth shot that gave the Ports a 6-3 edge. The homer was Carter’s seventh on the season, tying him with Sean Doolittle for the team lead.
With the win, the Ports kept pace with the San Jose Giants, who beat the Inland Empire 66ers 10-2. Stockton remains in a tie for first place with San Jose in the North Division.
The Ports and Quakes will play Game 3 of their four game set on Sunday at the Epicenter. Trevor Cahill (3-0, 2.35 ERA) will take the mound for Stockton, opposed by right-hander Tommy Mendoza (1-2, 3.86 ERA) for the Quakes. First pitch is set for 2:05 p.m. PST.

STOCKTON PORTS - Heuser, Ports Blank Quakes 6-0
Stockton PortsPosted by: cyberstockton
RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. – On Friday night, the Stockton Ports called on James Heuser (2-0) to make his first start of the season. Prior to Friday’s start, Heuser had appeared only in relief for the Ports in 2008, but had started all but one of his games for the Kane County Cougars in 2007. It didn’t take long for Heuser to settle into the starting role again; as he tossed 5.2 scoreless innings, helping the Ports to a 6-0 win over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes.
Heuser’s solid start was matched initially by Quakes starter David Herndon (0-3). Herndon breezed through the first 4.2 innings without allowing a run, but ran into trouble with two outs in the top of the fifth, when Matt Sulentic started a Stockton rally with a double to left. Archie Gilbert followed with an RBI single to left to break the scoreless tie and give Stockton a 1-0 lead. Josh Horton came up next and knocked an RBI triple to the gap in right to bring home Gilbert and make it 2-0. The next batter, Sean Doolittle, hit a high pop-fly on the infield. After some confusion, the ball dropped amidst five Quakes infielders, giving Doolittle a gift RBI single and giving the Ports a 3-0 lead.
All three runs were charged to Herndon, who took the loss after going five innings, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out four.
Heuser never really had his back against the wall. Heading into the sixth inning, Heuser had thrown just 53 pitches, and never more than 11 in an inning. In the sixth, he yielded a leadoff single to P.J. Phillips, but Phillips was caught stealing at second. Heuser then struck out Peter Borjos, but that would be the last batter he retired. Anthony Norman was issued a walk, and then Wil Ortiz hit a sharp grounder to short, and Horton had it go off his leg and into left field for an error.
With the tying run at the plate—Quakes home run and RBI leader Mark Trumbo—manager Darren Bush summoned reliever Chris Farley from the bullpen. Farley got Trumbo to ground to first to end what turned out to be the only Quakes threat of the night.
Heuser earned the win after 5.2 scoreless innings, allowing just four hits while striking out two. Farley pitched 1.2 scoreless innings and did well to preserve the 3-0 lead during his outing.
The Ports widened their lead in the eighth against Quakes reliever Felipe Arredondo. Arredondo allowed a leadoff single to Jed Morris, and three batters later, Mike Affronti lined a two-out RBI single to center to make it 4-0.
Stockton added two more in the top of the ninth against Aaron Cook. Gilbert led off with an infield single and stole second. He went to third when Horton reached on a throwing error by Phillips, the Quakes’ shortstop. Doolittle followed with an RBI double to right, and Chris Carter added a sac-fly to make it 6-0 Stockton.
Doolittle went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Gilbert went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Horton also scored two runs while going 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Arnold Leon pitched the final two innings and did not allow a run, sealing the victory for Stockton. The shutout is Stockton’s third on the season. The Ports shut out Modesto on April 6 (4-0) at Banner Island Ballpark, and shut out San Jose 3-0 at Municipal Stadium on April 16.
With the win, the Ports kept pace with the San Jose Giants, who blanked Inland Empire 7-0. Both teams remain tied for first place in the North Division.
The Ports and Quakes will play Game 2 of their four game set on Saturday at the Epicenter. Left-hander Brett Anderson (3-1, 2.66 ERA) will toe the rubber for Stockton, opposed by right-hander Tommy Mendoza (1-2, 3.86 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PST.
