Although not raised in a church-going family, gospel leader Kurt Carr took it upon himself to start attending services at age 13 and soon became active in his church's musical programs. Finding inspiration in albums by gospel greats Walter Hawkins, James Cleveland, and Andrae Crouch, Carr attended the University of Connecticut in his hometown of Hartford, graduating with a degree in fine arts and a new found appreciation of classical music. He was mentored by the classically trained gospel legend Richard Smallwood, who broadened the young student's horizons to include elements of different musical styles in his compositions and whom Carr still refers to as his "godfather." In 1986, Carr joined with Reverend James Cleveland and his ensemble, acting as pianist and musical director until the reverend's death in 1991.

Best known for her superb 1984 cover of Prince's "I Feel for You," R&B singer Chaka Khan enjoyed solo success as well as popularity as a member of the group Rufus. Born Yvette Marie Stevens in Great Lakes, IL, on March 23, 1953, she was raised on Chicago's South Side, and at the age of 11 formed her first group, the Crystalettes. While still in high school, she joined the Afro-Arts Theater, a group which toured with Motown great Mary Wells; a few years later, she adopted the African name Chaka Khan while working on the Black Panthers' breakfast program. After quitting high school in 1969, Khan joined the group Lyfe, soon exiting to join another dance band, the Babysitters; neither was on the fast track to success, but her fortunes changed when she teamed with ex-American Breed member Kevin Murphy and André Fisher to form Rufus.

Stockton's Youth Advisory Commission: Rock Your Vote! October 18th
Event

(Stockton, CA) - The City of Stockton's Youth Advisory Commission will present, Rock Your Vote!, on Saturday, October 18, 2008, 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at Central United Methodist Church, 3700 Pacific Avenue, across the street from the University of the Pacific (UOP).

Stockton's Rock the Vote! is an event organized by the Youth Education Action Team, a subcommittee of the Youth Advisory Commission. The goal of the event is to provide teens with the opportunity to debate current topics and evaluate political candidates, preparing them to make decisions for themselves when they are eligible to vote. Teens are invited and encouraged to participate in mock debates about current topics, such as the war in Iraq and global warming. Area high school teens will role play speeches and debates, acting as the current presidential candidates, and a mock vote will take place. Local candidates for political office will stop by to observe the process and interact with the teens.

"This is one of the most exciting elections in the history of America," said Ashley Kimball, Youth Advisory Commissioner from Lincoln High. "In less than two years, I'll be able to vote. Teens need to be ready to evaluate candidates and issues the first time we fill in a ballot, because we are the future."

Sponsoring organizations include the City of Stockton, Beyond Please and Thank You, and the League of Women Voters of San Joaquin County.

For additional information, please call Miranda Nighbor, Stockton Librarian and Youth Education Action Team Lead Assistant, at (209) 937-7778.

STOCKTON FIREFIGHTERS - Family Fire Safety Fest 2008 with Lowes, October 11
Event

(Stockton, CA) - A pot holder too close to a lit burner or a space heater left on overnight could be all it takes to start a home fire. In fact, cooking and heating are among the leading causes of home fires in the United States, according to the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). That's why Stockton Fire Department is teaming up with NFPA from October 5-11 to urge its residents to "Prevent Home Fires" during Fire Prevention Week. This year's campaign focuses on preventing all the leading causes of home fires - cooking, heating and electrical equipment, and smoking materials.

On Saturday, October 11, 2008, the Stockton Fire Department and Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse will present the 6th annual "Family Fire Safety Fest 2008." This festival will be held from 10 am to 2 pm at the Weber Point Events Center, on Center Street at Miner Avenue, downtown Stockton. The goal is to educate the public about the importance of fire safety. This is event is free and open to the public.

The festival will feature interactive fire safety education booths, games, food, prizes, multiple fire apparatus displays, Helicopter landing/ takeoff, Jaws of Life and Water Rescue demonstrations. Due to a generous donation from Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse, there will be a booth for residents to sign-up for a FREE smoke detector.

Everyone is encouraged to bring the entire family and participate in this fun and educational event.

For further information regarding the Family Fire Safety Fest, contact Danielle Neilson, Stockton Fire Department Public Education Specialist, at (209) 937-8338.
